Build a Firefighter Written-Exam Study Plan You Can Follow

A useful firefighter written-exam study plan begins with the assessment you have actually been asked to take. Build a routine around its published instructions, then use practice to find and repair specific weaknesses. Repeating complete tests without reviewing your decisions can leave the same mistakes in place.

Confirm the assessment before choosing materials

Recruitment processes differ. OFAI describes its FACT assessment, while Calgary identifies National Testing Network as its aptitude-test vendor. A CPS preparation resource therefore should not be treated as proof that your department uses CPS.

Save the current posting, invitation and provider guide together. Record the named assessment, assessed subjects, permitted tools, section rules and location or online requirements. Check whether you can revisit questions or move between sections. If an instruction is unclear, use the official contact route before test day.

Use a small baseline to set priorities

Choose a short mixed practice set that matches the published subject areas as closely as possible. Complete it under the rules you are preparing for. Mark any answer you guessed, even if it turns out to be correct. A correct guess does not show that you can reproduce the method.

For every missed or uncertain answer, write down the cause: misunderstood wording, missing concept, calculation error, overlooked detail or unfinished work. Then add one concrete repair. “Review maths” is vague; “convert all distances to metres before adding” gives your next session a clear purpose.

Follow a flexible four-week routine

The following is an example schedule, not a recruitment requirement. Move the sessions around your commitments and the time available before your assessment.

A 30-minute study session could contain five minutes reviewing an old mistake, fifteen minutes attempting fresh questions and ten minutes checking the reasoning. That split is a starting point. If most of your errors come from interpretation, give the review more time.

Measure improvement you can explain

Keep a simple log with the date, skill, number attempted, number correct and one lesson. Separate accuracy from completion time. When working faster causes more errors, return to a smaller untimed set and rebuild the method before adding a timer.

For example, an entry might read: “Ratios: 8 of 10 correct. Divided by the first ratio number rather than the total number of parts. Next session: three total-sharing examples.” Later, check that you can solve a new example without looking at the original solution.

Before the assessment, reread the invitation for required identification, permitted materials and check-in arrangements. Use the provider’s rules for unanswered questions and pacing. Practice results help direct your study; they do not establish an official pass mark or guarantee a hiring outcome.
